Research at the Image Permanence Institute: 2005-2009

As a research scientist at IPI, Ryan was involved with the research and development of specialized imaging techniques that depict the important visual and physical characteristics of photographic, photomechanical, and digital prints. In 2006, Ryan developed an online print characterization resource known as the Digital Sample Book. This website was a vast database of visually informative images that reveal the unique characteristics of each printing process. Recently, with James Reilly and Zach Long, he developed an expanded version, the Graphics Atlas, which seeks to educate the eye of the viewer to observe these characteristics when looking at prints without the use of sophisticated tools. This website also includes new functionality, more representative examples, and additional contextual information about the processes.
